On August 13, 2000, at Emich/Knight Field, Camano Island, Washington, I entered my
fifth official ASFA Lure Coursing event,
sponsored by W.R.A.G. This was my first time running in the field
champion stake!
There weren't very many dogs at this race. I don't know
why. Weather too nice? I know one of the clubs is having some
kind of specialty meet next week and some mommies and daddies want to save
their babies for that. There were only 5 whippets in the open stake,
5 in the field champion stake, 3 in the veteran's stake and 2
singles. Even though it was an All Breed event, there were no
non-whippets running.
I ran my preliminary run with Fila. Fila is 17th in the country
in lure coursing! I did very well, though.
Me on the left, Fila on the right.
For my final round, I got to run with Buddy and Reebok. (Fila
and Reebok are from the "tennis shoe" litter!) Buddy took
off way over to the right. I guess he was trying to cut that corner
big time! In fact, for much of the race, all three of us dogs were
pretty spread out. I was the only one actually following the
lure. No wonder I beat them!
Reebok in blue, Buddy in yellow, me in pink at the starting line.
Buddy is already cutting over to the right.
The fifth dog in my stake was Cayman, who is 7th in the country!
(To be in the top twenty, not only do you have to be good, but you have to
be willing to go to lots and lots of races in neighboring states to rack
up a lot of points. The southern dogs who get to run in the winter,
too, have an advantage. We are lucky to have a couple dogs from our
area in the top twenty. Click here
for the ASFA Top 20, then scroll to the bottom of the page. That's
where the whippets are.)
Anyway, Fila won 1st, Cayman got second and I got third place. I
also earned 10 points (2 per dog entered in my stake). Pat was nice
enough to cook up some liver square treats for all the dogs who
competed. Boy, were they yummy!
The best of breed runoff was between Fila, Wren (she won the open
stake and earned her field championship) and Rio from the veteran's
stake. Rio won, but not by much. There was no best in field
award because you need to have more than one breed for that.
The judges were Vern Staack, and either Greg Ward or Mike Savage, both
from Spokane.
